Happy and healthy parents are the first steps to providing a healthy start for your child. At UIC Healthy Start, you can get information to help you take care of yourself and your baby. Here you can receive in-person support from our staff who knows your community, speaks your language, respects you and respects your privacy.
What is Healthy Start?
Healthy Start is part of a national effort to improve birth outcomes, reduce infant mortality (death of a baby before age 1, maternal mortality and improve the health and wellness of families, mind, body and spirit! The program’s goal is to help, support, serve and improve the health of women, men and families living in Englewood, South Shore and Auburn Gresham.

What Do We Offer?
- One-on-one support for you and your family
- Linkage to quality health care providers
- Emergency infant/baby supplies
- Doula (birthing support) for new moms
- Breastfeeding support
- Behavior health support for those difficult times
- Health education and support
- Fatherhood program
- Referral and advocacy support for employment readiness, school entry, and moral support services, etc.
- A supportive Male Involvement Coordinator will help you develop a plan to reach your goals such as returning to school, getting back to work or other family life concerns.

We provide our participants with Uber rides to improve health outcomes by connecting them to care and services when needed.
Healthy Start can provide emergency supplies such as diapers and or formula to our enrolled participants.
UIC Healthy Start provides male involvement services to provide opportunities for father and significate males to enhance their relationships with their children and families.
Doula and Breastfeeding Support
UIC Healthy Start has a staff professionally trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. We also provide resources and training on how to safely breastfeed your baby.
Linkage to Quality Health Care Providers
When you sign up with UIC Healthy Start, you gain access to our network of quality health care providers. Our staff is also available to provide assistance with insurance enrollment.
Our staff is available to visit you at your home to aid you in accessing resources such as baby essentials, counseling, care coordination, and even assist in transportation.
We host events and trainings to encourage healthy parenting habits. We also provide resources to help young parents become the best version of themselves so your child can grow up in a healthy supportive environment.
Referral for Family Planning
Having a plan for your family is crucial in avoiding unexpected situations and making sure your baby has the resources and support needed to grow up healthy and strong. At UIC Healthy Start, you can receive resources and trainings to guide you as you plan for you and your baby’s future.
Referral for Nutritional Counseling
Eating healthy is vital to ensure proper development of a baby during pregnancy. It is also important that the parents eat and sleep properly to have the energy needed to raise their child and have a clear mind to make important developmental decisions. At UIC Healthy Start, you can receive access to information from experienced professionals who can guide you towards making eating habits and direct you to where you can find healthy food for you and your child.
